Originally,the golden locket was given to Pao-ch'ai by a monk when she was a child.The monk had predicted that she would happily marry a man born with a piece of jade in his mouth.Such a marriage would be called a "match between gold and jade."But Pao-yu did not know this and burst out giggling.Just then Tai-yu came in.As soon as she entered,she pointed to Pao-yu and said,"Ah!I have chosen the wrong time to come.If I'd known he was here,I wouldn't have come!"
