JiLin is a province in northeast of China,bordering on Russia in the north and North Korea in the east, and occupying the central part of the historic region of Manchuria as HeiLongjiang.In the east,it comprises high mountain ranges,in the west, a fertile lowland, and an intervening complex of low hills. The major river is called the SongHua River. Corn, soybeans, and sugar beets are the chief crops according to the low temperature. Forestry is important,too; and it's rich in the various mineral resources including coal, iron ore, copper, and lead.As the principal city,Changchun is also the capital and chief industrial center;Its major industries produce famous motor vehicles and railroad equipment.Another city is also called JiLin,a port and industrial center at the head of navigation on the SongHua River.Chemicals, ferroalloys, iron and steel, fertilizer, lumber, and processed food (especially sugar) stand for the development of its manufactures. Hydroelectricity is produced at nearby Fengman Dam,forming one of the largest in China.Area, about 187,000 sq km; population 27,280,000 (2000).
